Unexpected birder sightings

We never know where we'll come across birding in popular literature. I'm currently devouring Lee Child's series about former MP Jack Reacher, and in "The Enemy," I was surprised by this quick bit in chapter 14:

I knew plenty of guys like that. My own father had been one. Not that he had ever played golf. He watched birds. He had been in most countries of the world, and he had seen a lot of birds.
